Side out!

Have you ever seen that movie Side Out? Not a bad movie actually. Volleyball movies are few but it’s worth a couple hours of your time. Well, I digress. But it’s related because I instantly thought of this volleyball movie when I thought about a title for this post. And the title describes the drill perfectly (I know how you guys love descriptive titles.)

Donnie calls this one 3 out of 5. But really, it could be “anything” out of “anything.” You know your team. Set a realistic (yet challenging goal). Donnie’s mentor Bond Schymansky (Marquette University) sets a goal of 7 out of 10 for his stud, D1 players.

Enough digression, let’s get down to the meat. 3 out of 5 is a team, offense focused, side out drill. Let me explain what I mean by that.
1. On one side you have your 6 starters in their serve receive positions (We’ll call them “starters”).
2. On the other side is the rest of the team (We’ll call them the “challengers”).
3. The challengers serve the first ball to the starters, who try to get a side out against the challengers’ super awesome defense.
4. Repeat until the starters either side out 3 times or you reach 5 serves.

3 out of 5 is an important game situation drill for your team. Especially when the other team is on a serving run. Get good at this drill and you’ll be good siding out, thus scoring more points! Good luck.
