I think many of you know by now how much I like repetition.
Ok. Not that kind of repetition. I’m talking about in volleyball. Like this Ladder Drill. This type of repetition is not annoying at all. Actually, it’s kinda fun.
1. Line up some girls at the net. We have 3 on one side and 2 on the other side (but you do what you can with your number of players).
2. The rest of the players line up on one side at the 10′ line with a volleyball.
3. Pass and shuffle through the tossers and when you get to the end, pass to yourself as you walk around the net and continue on the other side.
4. After one round, switch to passing from 15-18′ back. Repeat step 3.
5. Now, switch to setting at the 10′ line. Repeat step 3 (but with sets of course).
6. Now, step back to 15-18′ again. Repeat step 3 (again, with sets).
If you like to stress repetition (and you should). This is the perfect drill for your team. Even the targets are getting reps while they stand there. I LOVE repetition. It is KEY to improving your game.
Now get to practice!
Pass to yourself, set to your partner.
Wait a minute… “pass to yourself”?
Now, I know, in a game you wouldn’t typically pass to yourself… but there will be a time when you will need to crack your platform (bending your elbows) almost that much to keep the ball from crossing the net. PLUS, this ball control drill is good for repetition during warming up. Get more of a variety of reps in a drill like this.
It’s also very simple to master. As my 7-year-old would say, “Easy peasy lemon squeezy.”
There are many combinations of hits you could apply to this type of drill, can you think of any?
When I played Division I volleyball, 3 or 4 times a week I’d be scheduled with the coach for an “individual.” Individuals usually consisted of me and 2 or 3 other players (I guess that’s as individual as it gets when you have 17 other players on the team). Lovin college volleyball
.
Annnnyway, this drill reminds me of my individuals, except it’s demonstrated by young high school volleyball players. Just a few girls getting reps for about 30 min to an hour. It’s a good time, outside of practice, to get individual attention from the coach. I guess that’s where the name came from. In a setup like this one, the coach can look for skills that need work within each player – such as approaches, etc…
The video is self explanatory. If you have questions, feel free to post them in the comments section.
Limited time to practice ball control? Introducing four 60-second ball control drills! What’s more, they’re partner drills (my fave)!
(For the sake of time in this video, we only show either setting or passing but we have the girls do both.)
First, we’ll start with the easy one. As a pair, the girls must get as many passes/sets as they can in 60 seconds. This means low, first tempo passes and sets.
Second, the pair must get exactly 60 passes/sets in 60 seconds. This means low, first tempo. It should only be one second from each pass/set to the next.
Third, the pair must get exactly 30 passes/sets in 60 seconds. Higher, second and third tempo passes/sets in this one.
And fourth, the pair will pepper for 60 seconds. If they drop the ball at any time in the 60 seconds, they must spend the remainder of the time doing “partner pushups” on the volleyball (as seen in the video).
If your team cannot complete any of these tasks, it’s up to you if you want to have a punishment/reward system. Perhaps a little Court Fun’s?
