Shuffle Challenge-Diagonal Pass

Ahhh… I can still hear the voice of my coach from my freshman year in college, “Passing and shuffling. Shuffling and passing. Passing and shuffling…” He droned on and on… and on. At the time, (which was usually 7 a.m.) it was extremely annoying. But now (10 years and 14 hours later), it makes sense! Which is why I’m going to tell you about, “Passing and shuffling. Shuffling and passing…”

In this volleyball drill, you have one passer and two tossers.
1. Tossers stand about 15-20 ft apart on the 10-ft line and toss the volleyball toward the opposite corner.
2. The passer will shuffle back and forth and position herself to receive the volleyball on her left knee and pass the ball back to the tosser.
3. After 10 repetitions, rotate positions. Everyone gets a turn!

Note: the passer should be shuffling laterally along the court and it doesn’t hurt to shuffle through the pass.

Alternative drill: Change it up and have the tossers throw the ball straight instead of at angle for Shuffle Challenge-Straight Pass.

How to practice passing on the left

You want your players to pass on the left, right? (the answer is yes) But, they’re used to the “way they’ve been taught” straight on or wherever the ball is. What they have yet to realize is their form makes all the difference in the ease of the task. For example, a player who drops her shoulder to tilt her platform will not have to swing her arms as much or create some crazy-looking forearm maneuver to get the ball all the way over to the setter. This drill makes the player over-exaggerate the form required to pass on the left and get it to the setter.

Coach, stand on a box on the opposite side of the net at right front.

One player is the target between middle and right front.

Another player takes a knee at left front (drop the left knee), about 6-8 ft from the net. This will make it nearly impossible to pass on the right.

1. Coach tosses the volleyball ball slightly over the net.
2. The passer must drop her right shoulder and tilt her platform far enough to push the volleyball all the way to the target.
3. 20 reps

This is a basic form passing drill. It’s not good for conditioning but passing reps in this position will get your players used to passing on the left.

Angle-Angle

This is a dynamic digging volleyball drill. But, there’s more to it than that. Read on!

Here’s what you need.
3 volleyball players
2 coaches
lots of volleyballs

-Coaches, take right front and left front.

-Put one girl in the middle the net. She’s your setter.

-Then, the other 2 claim right back and middle back (for now, because they’ll be moving).

The coach in left front starts. She hits a down ball toward the right back/middle back area. The girls must communicate for the dig.

Then the “setter” will set either coach (her choice). The “chosen” coach will hit a down ball to the diggers. Coaches must hit the opposite angle from where they are standing. Hence the name “Angle-Angle.”

Depending on which coach hits, the diggers must shuffle back and forth… quickly.

After about 10 swings, switch jobs. Make sure each girl gets a chance to set.
