Don’t go chasin’ waterfalls

Yea! Finally! A new volleyball drill video!

What are we working on here:
- blocking (obviously)
- footwork
- speed
- vertical
- avoiding waterfalls (when the other team hits into your block and the ball falls on your side of the net. Very embarrassing.)

This blocking video is pretty self explanatory: wash, rinse, repeat. Feel free to assign your own reps.

Swing block: epic fail

There was some decent feedback on our blocking video (well, on YouTube). And… then there was “tenacioustrav,” who offered the valuable input of

Wow. Just imagine this guy being a coach.

Player: Coach Tenacioustrav, how do you think I played?
Tenacioustrav: What didn’t you do wrong?
Player: (Completely clueless) Um.

Anyway… Back to video. Let me set the scene. This player is 14 and just learned a new style of blocking. That said, let’s evaluate.

1. She’s late but she got pretty far out there anyway. Had there been a right side blocker, she probably wouldn’t have had to go out quite that far.
2. She doesn’t square up her feet. Even if she did get all the way out there, she probably would’ve been tooled (that is, the hitter would have hit the ball off her hands/out of bounds, i.e. you don’t want to EVER get tooled.)
3. When blocking, you want to jump milliseconds after the hitter. She jumped a little too late.
4. She sort of attempted to penetrate the net but, again, she was so late, it wouldn’t have mattered. You can tell she’d abandoned the block at that point.

To add insult to injury, this young player also just got schooled by her older sister. Ouch.

See anything I missed?

PS. Tenacioustrav is now a fan of volleyballdrills.tv on youtube. Can’t wait to see more gems from this guy.

Volleyball: Blocking/Transition warmup

Volleyball hitters and blockers: 8 steps to get those feet moving along the net.

1. Get a partner. 1 blocker/hitter.
2. Position yourself on the opposite of the net from your partner.
3. Partner has two balls helping blocker keep arms wide on block.
4. Half block; then transition.
5. Repeat 5 times.
6. Switch.
7. Partner does 5 reps.
8. Move to different blocking position and repeat steps 1-7.

As always, feel free to let us know if you have a question or comment (below).
