Volleyball Outside Hitters: Transition to approach

Since our transition-approach videos have been getting so much buzz on youtube. Thought I’d post another one.

Outside Hitters, this one’s for you!

In this demonstration, our outside hitter is swinging out to assist the block on the left side. In which case, she would open to the court right-left-hop, turn then immediately moving to a modified 3-step approach.

Volleyball Middle Blockers: Transition to slide approach

The slide attack is often terminal when done correctly. Here’s a demo on how to do a slide approach after a blocking transition.

In this demonstration, our middle blocker is assisting the block on the right side. And she’ll transition just like she did in this drill. She opens to the court left-right-hop, turns then immediately moves to an approach for a slide set.

For the slide approach, she’ll “show and go.” Show (straight step to the net with her left foot) then turn parallel to the net and “go” right-left for a slide swing. Really work on driving that right knee up. The jump is one-footed.

Or you could give her the commands “setter, sideline, ball.” First step straight toward the setter/net, second step toward the sideline and the third toward the ball.

Hitters: Pump up that arm swing

Not getting enough power in your arm swing? Here’s a quick and easy volleyball drill for your hitters.

Drive and exchange. Have your player pump her arms three times to build muscle memory on a drive up simulating an approach. Then exchange left arm with right high elbow on the follow through.

It’s easy to break down the last part of the attack when you don’t have to worry about the whole jumping part.

Volleyball drills like this are perfect for individual workouts also.
