From one coach to another
The other day, a former collegiate volleyball player approached Donnie asking to use his volleyball court for a few minutes after practice for her 7th grade daughter to practice serving. You see her coach would not play anyone who couldn’t serve overhand (sound familiar?)
As they practiced, Donnie paced back and forth, he had to offer his expertise. He gave the girl a few tips. Then she and her mother left with smiles on their faces and just a little more volleyball confidence.

The next day Donnie ran into the mom and asked how daughter was doing. She responded, “Do I have a story for you.”
Turns out, the day after their practice, the daughter went to her coach and eagerly explained that a college coach was helping her with her serve. So rest assured, she’d be consistently serving overhand soon.
The coach, infuriated, told her that was not allowed. Then he made an all-team announcement with the message that he was the 7th most winningest coach in the state, the Maharaja of volleyball, the sultan of spike, the prince of the pass (ok I added that other stuff but you get the idea), and being the almighty expert in the sport of volleyball, no player under his tutelage would be allowed to seek lessons or teaching from another coach.
WTF?! Are that insecure that you forbid your players from improving through the help of another coach? Get over yourself. “Ok, team, I’m not gonna take the time to teach you this, but don’t go try learning it on your own. Just sit on the bench.”
Most of all, don’t let your insecurity hold your players back.
Tornadoes on the horizon; Makin’ it rain on the court
I haven’t seen much storming here yet so I decided to post this video where our girls demonstrate the second progression of tempo hitting. They’re still learning to make it rain. Not bad for 14-year-olds, eh?
If you haven’t already, check out Progression 1.

Volleyball how-to: 1-foot hitting – Tempo Timing Progressions
Here’s something a little new. In this how-to, Donnie’s club team is learning how to run his quick-tempo offense. Using volleyball players who have rarely (if ever) run these plays before can give you an idea of what it might be like for your youths when they first start hitting these quicks. Take a look… and… let me know if you have any questions (in the comments section below).
Are you warming up incorrectly?
Got a big volleyball game coming up? Here is a GREAT article on warming up. Specifically using a dynamic warmup prior to a volleyball game.
Volleyball Warm-Up Do’s and Dont’s with Kari Schneider
How is your warm-up working for you? Are you sitting around stretching your hamstrings? Are you jogging in circles? Should you stretch statically or dynamically? Let me just tell you…
Here is the question…How should an athlete warm-up and what type of stretching should they do pre-workout or match and post? I have been asked this question so many times that my answer is pretty rehearsed by now-so here is the short version… After working with thousands of athletes and clients my answer is simple, pre training or competition is dynamic and post is static. Now of course there is always the exception to the rule but I’ll give you some of the reasons why I have answered this way.
