Volleyball sub-state champs!

My team just won sub-state for the first time in school history. We’re state-bound this weekend and hope to return with another school-first. That is… a STATE TITLE!

Did you have success at sub-state? How did your season end up?

Setters Pass 4s

Setters Pass 4s is a setter’s repetition drill. But, fortunately for the setters, it offers just a little bit of variety.

With one partner, the setters perform 10 reps of each of the following setting functions.

1. Basic Hands: Just setting back and forth

2. Step and Turn: The girls move back and forth sort of chasing the sets. Take a little crossover step and a turn back toward her partner to set. The partner mimics her step sequence and returns the set. (This drill helps with footwork when the setter must retrieve a ball that is off the net)

3. Quick Pulses: Setting back and forth but with a quick pulse set to herself in between.

4. Up and Turn: She sets the ball straight up and then turns 180 degrees to back set the ball to her partner.

This is a great warmup drill for your setters when hitters are working on box approaches.

4-man passing in volleyball

This volleyball drill can be described as a cooperative skinny court drill or 4-man pepper with a net. It’s a very good drill for ball control. Each dig, each set, each hit must be carefully executed to keep the ball in play.

1. Split the court (lengthwise)
2. 2 players on each side. One is at the net (setter) and the other is a few feet behind the 10-ft line (passer/hitter).
3. The 4 players work together (similar to pepper but with 4 players instead of 2) to keep it going.
4. Dig-set-hit; Dig-set-hit.

Clean. Simple. Fun.

Try it with your team and let us know if you have any suggestions for variations!

How to do a slide approach in volleyball

In my opinion, the slide approach is the most difficult approach in volleyball. It’s also the most terminal. With that in mind, we put together a step-by-step pictorial for you (you’re welcome).

Step 1 – Show
In the photo below, the player is taking her first step (in the approach-not in life). She steps toward the setter with her left foot. She must leave for her approach with the same timing as a quick set. That is, she must run with the pass. It’s called “show” because she’s showing the blockers that she’s coming in for a quick… or is she?

Slide1

Step 2 – Go
In her second step (with her right foot), the player goes toward the court sideline. This is a big, fast step (remember, you’re trying to fool the blockers).

Slide2

Step 3 – Drive
Now she steps toward the net, or the volleyball, with her left foot. As she jumps, she drives her right knee up and turns her body toward the court. If her timing is just right, she will meet the ball behind the setter, just above the net.

NOTE: It’s key that she takes off on one foot to achieve maximum reach.
